Grades 9-12
Overview & Goals
North Toronto Academy’s high school program provides Personalized Education to students in Grades 9-12. Our high school program has two components – 1) full-time day school and 2) part-time and summer school credit courses.
Our full time day program is designed specifically for students who may not have achieved strong academic results to date, may not be motivated to perform well in school, may be either ‘overly social’ or socially immature, or who may have a mild cognitive or learning disability.
The program is ideal for these students, whether or not they are formally “identified” with a learning disability and have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). The NTA program is not designed for those students who have profound learning disabilities, or who have major behavioural problems.
|
|
Our part-time program is designed for students of all abilities who want to repeat a failed course, upgrade a mark, or earn a new credit. This program delives unparalleled scheduling flexibility, including private 1:1 courses and 'offsite' courses where teacher support is provided via telephone and internet (email, live chat).
NOTE: As an Ontario Ministry of Education inspected and accredited school, North Toronto Academy adheres to all rules and regulations set out in the Education Act, and in the “Ontario Secondary Schools 1999” document, and relevant follow-on policy memoranda. These documents are available for review at the school or on the Ministry’s website.

Full Time Day Program
The goals of our full time program are to deliver Personalized Education to each student, and to prepare him or her, both academically and socially, for University or College studies. Academically, NTA's program meets and exceeds the requirements of the Ontario curriculum. While we provide a broad range of courses, our first focus is on ensuring our students are strong enough in the basics – English and Math – to gain acceptance into a post-secondary program if they choose that direction.
NTA's small class sizes, low student-teacher ratio, and experienced teachers with Special Education qualifications, all help ensure our students get the education they need to be successful beyond high school. These aspects, combined with our emphasis on study skills and organization, and supported by our student laptop program, work together to provide an exceptionally well-tailored educational experience that addresses the most important needs of our students.
From a social development point of view, the school focuses strongly on teaching students the importance and value of taking personal responsibility for ones self, for delivering on commitments, and fostering healthy social relationships. Our "small school" setting provides a safe and manageable environment for students to develop socially, away from the many distracting and often negative influences and behaviours common in larger schools.
Program Structure North Toronto Academy’s full time day program is divided into three trimesters of 13 weeks each over the Sept-June academic year. Students take up to three courses in each trimester (“3x3” structure), with classes of 110 minutes duration taken in each course, every school day. This '3x3' structure is unique in Toronto, and it's success rate significantly outperforms other structures in terms of both student grades and student satisfaction. The benefits of NTA’s “3x3” trimester system include:
- Students have the ability to earn up to 9 credits in an academic year, instead of the maximum of 8 credits under the other systems. This enables either earlier graduation, or the ability to repeat courses or upgrade marks, without taking summer school.
- The “3x3” system allows for even more intensive focus on each course, and earlier “moving on”, than the more common 2 semesters of 4 courses each (“2x4”) approach, as well as being more manageable from a workload/homework point of view.
- Similarly “3x3” allows more time, more ability to recover from interruptions in attendance, and more variety to hold the student’s interest than the 4 semesters of 2 courses each (“4x2”) approach of some schools. Many students with motivation and/or cognitive/learning disabilities just cannot get full value from a class that lasts for an entire half school day, and so have great difficulty completing a full credit course successfully in just 8 weeks. Continuous Admissions North Toronto Academy takes in new students at any time during the year, notwithstanding our formal trimester dates. For students joining in mid-trimester, we work with the former school to determine if we can “tie into” the courses the student was taking there, so that the work already done is not lost.
Study Skills & Organization Reading, writing and math are not the only skills needed to be successful in school. Students must also know how to study effectively and efficiently, how to manage their time, and how to stay organized. And these skills are all the more important for students that are behind their peers in terms of academic knowledge, ability to focus, or motivation.
North Toronto Academy’s programs incorporate specific focus and individual coaching on these critical success factors. In Grade 9, we use the Learning Strategies credit course to polish these skills, and bring them up to the level required for high school level work. In Grades 10-12 teachers monitor student goal setting, organization skills and time management activities, and coach and encourage them to develop their own style of staying organized, productive and effective at managing their time.
Guidance Guidance support is provided to students.
Outside the Classroom North Toronto Academy makes use of the rich cultural, political and artistic aspects of the city and the province. Students will have field trips relevant to their classes and visit various venues that give life to the material they learn in school.

Flexible Part Time Programs
Unmatched scheduling flexibility, in combination with North Toronto Academy’s personalized education approach, are the characteristics of our part-time credit course program.
NTA will create a customized schedule to meet your needs - whether its booking in class time on a ad hoc basis around an already packed schedule, or enabling the student to complete the 110 hour course in the minimum elapsed time possible, NTA will work with you to make it happen. Examples include highly customized schedules, private 1:1 courses and 'offsite' courses where teacher support is provided via telephone and internet (email, live chat).
Many of NTA's part-time students are enrolled as full time students in other schools, but choose to take a specific course at NTA instead of their regular school. The reasons students take courses outside their regular schools include:
- To avoid the distractions and lack of teacher attention associated with large class sizes
- They have difficulty with the subject and need extra teacher attention to be successful
- They have a conflict with the teacher at their full-time school, and so opt to take the course outside the school
- Scheduling conflicts, or the course isn't offered at their regular school
- Repeat a failed course, or upgrade a mark
- To "get ahead" by earning an extra credit so that their workload in the next semester can be reduced, or they can graduate sooner.
- They attend school on a part-time basis only – usually competitive athletes or mature students.
Contact the school to discuss the details of your particular situation, and we will come up with a schedule that works for you.
