Admissions

Overview

Continuous, year-round admissions - North Toronto Academy strives to personalize the education experience for every student, and to meet their particular educational needs in every way. To this end, NTA is usually prepared to take-in new students in at any time during the school year.

If your child’s personal situation requires him or her move schools in mid-year, North Toronto Academy can accommodate this.  We work with your child's former school to understand what learning has occured to date, and then develop a personalized plan to integrate your child into our school’s academic and social life, and to support him or her throughout the transition.

Application Procedure

A word from the Principal about Admissions...

Thank you for your interest in North Toronto Academy. NTA is a unique and specialized school, offering highly personalized education to a fairly small group of students.  We pride ourselves on providing a supportive, nurturing, enriching, comfortable and safe school where our students can work to achieve their academic goals and develop social maturity, in a positive, constructive, ‘stress-free’ and ‘drama-free’ environment.  In order to ensure we can provide this positive learning and social environment, we are selective about whom we accept into the school.

North Toronto Academy is not for everyone. Our full-time programs are designed specifically for students who may have not been strong academic performers to date, who may lack the motivation to do well in school, who may be socially immature or overly social, or who may have a mild cognitive or learning disability.  The program is not designed for students with profound cognitive or learning disabilities, or major behavioural issues.  Our students are looking to improve their core academic skills and work habits to the point they can return to a more mainstream public or private high school, or proceed on to post-secondary studies at University or College.

For the relationship to work, the fit must be right for both the student and the school.  To this end, our admissions process seeks to determine whether this fit exists, and we encourage the prospective student and his or her parents to evaluate the school to determine whether the fit would be comfortable, and meet his or her needs.

If you have any questions about our program, or would like to visit our school to discuss your child’s specific needs, please contact myself, or our Education Director Danielle Major, and we will be happy to help.

Sincerely

Douglas Moore

Principal

Application Procedure

  1. Interview & Supporting Documentation
  2. Academic Assessment (Gr. 7-9, if required)
  3. Admission Decision, Offer and Acceptance

Interview

We begin with an informal meeting between the student, parents and the Principal. The goal of the meeting is for all parties to determine whether there is a fit between the students needs, goals and personality and the school’s programs and culture.

Parents should bring the following to the interview:

  • completed application form
  • a copy of the student’s most recent report card
  • copies of the last two years final report cards
  • any psychological/educational assessments completed in the last two years

Academic Assessment

If the student, parents and Principal are all satisfied that the right fit exists between the prospective student and the School, the next step involves an Academic Assessment of the student’s skills in reading, writing and math. The school uses the results to personalize the student’s program  - it is not an “entrance exam”.  There is no fee for the assessment.

Grades 7-9: Students who have not taken the SSAT are required to participate in our assessment process.  The assessment takes 2-3 hours, and is designed to identify the child’s abilities in mathematics, vocabulary, spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension.

Grades 10, 11 & 12: Students are admitted based on submission of current academic records.

Decision on Admission and Offer

Once testing, if required, is completed and all supporting documentation has been received and carefully reviewed, your child may be offered admission. To accept the offer and secure your child’s placement, submit completed registration forms along with the fees.
